In the present knowledge economy, written communication dominates a fast paced digital society. 48% of Canadians and 53% of Québécois between 16 and 65 years old do not have the reading and comprehension skills and 54% of Canadians and 55% of Québécois do not have the numeracy skills necessary to perform well in their daily lives, and at work where the tasks are more complex. This is a national alarming economic challenge! It creates major negative socioeconomic impacts for individuals, firms and society, and slows the enrichment for all. The documentary analyzes the current situation and demonstrates how innovative solutions at school, for people living in poverty, for firms and for society, are a win-win outcome for all. Why are we all waiting to take action?

Documentary, 45 min., directed by Sylvie Rosenthal

The documentary AVEUGLES DE LUXE follows nine Quebecers with differing visual impairments who successfully navigate professional life in the “real world.” Entrepreneurs, professionals, tradespeople: each participant shares their personal journey on the road to professional success, challenging societal attitudes about blindness as a disability. Rejecting labels of ‘hero’ or ‘victim,’ these blind professionals are vibrant, funny, dynamic and determined. They are highly relatable in their desire to succeed in work and in life – just like the rest of us!
At times, the visual impairments of the protagonists are simulated on-screen to further immerse the viewer in the protagonists’ worlds, to gain insight into their everyday lives and illuminate the unique perspectives they bring to the importance of social integration and participation for the differently-abled.

SHORT SYNOPSIS

Synopsis
In order to finally set the record straight about family caregivers, four family caregivers, aged 34 to 61, who are looking after their parents, children or spouses aged 10 to 97, allow us into their lives and show us the burdens of their daily routine. Theirs is a world of abnegation, isolation, exhaustion and impoverishment. In the thick of their travails, they confide their feelings and frustrations and propose solutions to improve their condition. They find themselves abandoned by their milieu – jobs that cannot accommodate their needs, archaic labour laws that cannot adjust to their realities, and government help that is still embryonic and minimal. We also follow Caroline, Coordinator of an Association of family caregivers. In addition to providing support to caregivers, she is campaigning on their behalf. Nobody is immune to becoming a caregiver overnight or suddenly in need of one him/herself. The precarious situation of caregivers is alarming. If nothing is done to improve their conditions, we will find ourselves sick and we will die alone at home, no matter what our age. Is that what we can expect from society?
